06/11/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament's Environment Committee voted 62 to 11 in favour of a very ambitious EU position for COP25 on climate change (Madrid, 2-13 December): MEPs want the EU to make a commitment in Madrid to achieve zero net CO2 emissions by 2050. They also request that the EU notify the UNFCCC of its long-term climate strategy as soon as possible. According to them, the ‘Green Deal’ promised by the President-elect of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, must provide for an increase from the 2030 target to a 55% reduction in EU emissions compared to 1990 – an increase considered essential to help achieve the 2050 target. EUROPE will continue to follow this story. Parliament will vote at its plenary session on 25-28 November. (AN)
