EU welcomes agreement between government and separatists of Southern Transitional Council

The spokesperson of the European External Action Service (EEAS) welcomed, on Tuesday 5 November, the conclusion of the agreement earlier today between the Government of Yemen and the separatists of the Southern Transitional Council.

In a statement, the spokesperson said it was an "important step towards de-escalation and peace for Yemen and for the region". "Today, the country is closer to reaching a negotiated and inclusive peace settlement that puts an end to the ongoing conflict, which has led Yemen to become the world's worst humanitarian crisis", she said.

According to the spokesperson, the EU therefore encourages the signatory parties to "to seize this window of opportunity to resume work towards a negotiated and sustainable peace under the auspices of the United Nations, ensuring the involvement of all Yemenis in the de-escalation and reconciliation process.". The Houtis rebels are not part of the 5 November agreement.

Reaffirming the EU's commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Yemen, the spokesperson called on all parties to bring an end to the suffering of the Yemeni people.

The agreement between the government and the southern separatists provides for the formation of a new government and its return to Aden. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
