06/11/2019 (Agence Europe) – GUE/NGL Co-President Manon Aubry (GUE/NGL, France) responded vehemently, on Tuesday 5 November, on her Twitter account, to the decision of European Parliament President David Sassoli (S&D, Italy) to launch a sanction procedure against her. The President sent a letter to the Co-President, pointing out that she had called in a tweet on the members of Extinction Rebellion to occupy the European Parliament. However, the appeal contravenes the rules of conduct of Parliament members, according to the Parliament President, who intends to open sanction proceedings against the French MEP. “Do we have the right to express our support for non-violent civil disobedience actions? For the President of the European Parliament, the answer is NO!” said Ms Aubry, who said that “this letter [...] constitutes a serious challenge to MEPs’ freedom of expression”. (PH)
