26/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – For reasons of public health and environmental protection, Members of the European Parliament's Environment Committee vetoed the renewal of authorisations for 63 active substances in plant protection products, more commonly known as pesticides, on Wednesday 25 September. The objection vote concerned in particular the extension of the authorisation of the active substances flumioxazine (objection approved by 47 votes to 22 against, with 1 abstention) and chlorotoluron (49 votes to 20 against, with 1 abstention). By this group vote on proposals for group authorisations from the Commission, Parliament has decided against keeping these active substances on the market, in order to send a strong signal. However, it will not be binding on the Commission in any way. If the European Parliament endorses these objections at the October plenary session, the Commission will not be legally obliged to act on them. (AN)
