26/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 26 September, the chairwoman of the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Human Rights, Marie Arena (S&D, Belgium), welcomed the release, the day before, of Algerian political opponent Karim Tabbou (see EUROPE 12327/19). A member of the protest movement in Algeria, Mr Tabbou was detained on 12 September for damaging the morale of the army. His arrest sparked a wave of outrage in the country. The MEP also reiterated her call for the immediate release of all political prisoners. “The way out of the crisis in Algeria can only be through politics and dialogue”, she said on Twitter. Parliament will continue to monitor developments closely, she said. (MF)
