EU launches new initiative to support religious commitments

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, announced on Friday 6 September the launch of a new initiative for members of civil society working on issues at the intersection of faith and social inclusion.

This new EU-sponsored initiative, entitled 'Global Exchange on Religion in Society', will link community stakeholders inside and outside Europe to learn from each other, explore partnerships, acquire new skills and intensify positive experiences of coexistence between people of different faiths in pluralistic societies.

According to Ms Mogherini, it is "a kind of Erasmus for people who work to build coexistence and respect. We want to invest in good stories, connect experiences, recognize the positive role of religion in some parts of the world", she explained at the initiative's launch conference in Brussels.

The project is expected to be operational in the first half of 2020 and will be funded by the partnership instrument. Management will be entrusted to an organisation through an open call for tenders, a European source told EUROPE. When asked about the amount allocated to this initiative, this source did not respond.
