06/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – The own-initiative report that the European Parliament's Committee on the Environment will prepare on the protection and preservation of the world's forests is not just a report on the European Commission's communication of 23 July. It is a "legislative own-initiative report", said the Chairman of the parliamentary committee, Pascal Canfin, during the debate on Thursday 5 September (see EUROPE 12321/4). Such a report is intended to encourage the Commission to legislate. MEPs will therefore present a concrete legislative proposal, which should be approved by the future Commission, if it is to keep the promises made by Ursula von der Leyen in July. Many MEPs called for regulatory measures to regulate imports of products related to deforestation. In its communication, the Juncker Commission refers to the possibility of legislative measures. A debate is scheduled for the plenary session in Strasbourg (16-19 September). (AN)
