06/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – The British newspaper Financial Times revealed on 3 September that the team of the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, intended to renounce the commitments made by former Prime Minister Theresa May, to maintain “a level playing field” between the EU and the Kingdom after Brexit. This mainly concerns London's compliance with EU social and environmental standards. Boris Johnson would like to redraft some parts of the political declaration on future EU-UK relations. But this derogation will undermine the EU's willingness to conclude an ambitious trade agreement with London and/or to ratify such an agreement, warned MEPs, officials and diplomats, according to the London newspaper, on 6 September. The EU is concerned that, after Brexit, its neighbour across the Channel will relax these standards in order to favour its companies. (HD)
