06/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – The EU/Australia agreement on the collection of passenger name record (PNR) data from travellers between Australia and the European Union, concluded for the purpose of combating terrorism, was automatically renewed this summer for seven years until 2026. This agreement, which entered into force in June 2012, provides for a data storage period of five and a half years. It is less controversial in the European Parliament than the agreement with the United States or Canada, the latter having been invalidated in 2017 by the EU Court of Justice (see EUROPE 11837/2). Neither party provided notice, one year before its expiry, of a desire to not renew the agreement. Both sides are now carrying out a joint assessment of the agreement, which is expected to be ready by the end of 2019, according to an EU Council source. (SP)
