Commission is generally satisfied with application of EU data protection rules

24/07/2019 (Agence Europe)Just over a year after the entry into force of the general regulation (2016/679) on personal data protection, the European Commission considered on Wednesday 24 July that the European Union rules on the subject have been generally well applied, except in Greece, Portugal and Slovenia. These three Member States have not yet fully aligned their national legislation. European citizens are more aware of their rights, but only 20% of them know which authority is competent to enforce them. The European Commissioner for Justice, Věra Jourová, asserted that the ‘GDPR’ Regulation can serve as a model at international level. In particular, the Commission hopes to complete a bilateral agreement in this area with South Korea and will explore the possibility of establishing multilateral frameworks for safe and secure data exchange. EUROPE will continue to follow this story. (MB)
