EU signs a new 5-year protocol with Senegal

The EU and Senegal have reached a compromise on a new protocol to the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement, the European Commission announced on Wednesday 24 July.

The new 5-year protocol implementing the 2015 agreement will replace the current one, which expires in November 2019.

This new protocol allows EU vessels (28 tuna seiners, 10 pole-and-line vessels, 5 longliners and 2 trawlers) to fish for tuna-like species and hake in Senegal's waters.

This protocol “will contribute to the sustainable management and conservation of natural resources in the waters of Senegal”, the Commission notes.

The protocol provides for a lower total allowable catch (TAC) for hake than the TAC of the current protocol. The reference tonnage for tuna has been adapted to historical catches. Measures are planned to limit catches of birds and marine mammals and to reinforce the role of scientific observers.

The EU's financial contribution to Senegal will be €1,700,000 per year, including €900,000 to promote sustainable fisheries in Senegal (strengthening controls and the fight against illegal fishing).

In addition, EU funds will support the development of small-scale fishing.

Shipowners will also contribute approximately €1,350,000 per year to the protocol. The latter will enter into force when the legislative acts are adopted. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
