22/07/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 22 July, the European Commission approved an Italian measure to support the distribution of newspapers at reduced rates. Values it €171.74 million, it will be granted to Poste Italiane in the form of public service obligation compensation from 2017 to 2019. The objective of this assistance is preserving and fostering media plurality and diversity of views by charging reduced rates to publishers and newspapers for the distribution of certain publications. The institution assessed this measure in the light of the rules of Union law on EU State aid rules on public service compensation. Considering that the measure was proportionate, did not give rise to overcompensation and was appropriate, the Commission concluded that it was compatible with EU law. (LT)
