The EU Council of Ministers adopted without debate on Thursday 16 May the three legislative acts on the conclusion of the new Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the EU and Cape Verde (see EUROPE 12119/20).
The previous Protocol to the Agreement expired on 22 December 2018 and a new Protocol was initialled by the Parties on 12 October 2018.
The new five-year fisheries agreement (2019-2024) will provide EU vessels with licences to catch 8,000 tonnes of tuna and tuna-like species per year in Cape Verdean waters.
In return, the EU will provide Cape Verde with a financial contribution of €750,000 per year. Part of this annual contribution (€350,000) will be used to promote sustainable fisheries management in Cape Verde.
The fishing opportunities provided for are: - tuna seiners (Spain: 16 vessels; France: 12 vessels); - surface longliners (Spain: 21 vessels; Portugal: 6 vessels); - pole-and-line tuna vessels (Spain: 8 vessels; France: 4 vessels; Portugal: 2 vessels).
