The European Commission adopted on Tuesday 14 May an implementing decision to harmonise the 26 GHz pioneer band to facilitate the deployment of fifth generation (5G) mobile networks.
With this decision, Member States may impose harmonised technical conditions to allow the use of this frequency band for 5G systems by 31 December 2020, in accordance with the European Electronic Communications Code (see EUROPE 11973/7).
This decision was taken on the basis of a positive opinion from the European Spectrum Policy Group.
Compared to the other two pioneer bands (e.g.: 3.4 - 3.8 GHz), the 26 GHz frequency band is the one with the highest capacity.
According to a study carried out on behalf of the Commission and to be published in the coming weeks, the first services to be deployed via the pioneering 26 GHz band will be Enhanced Mobile Broadband services such as high-definition video communications and virtual or augmented reality.
The first coverage will be large congested cities, major transport corridors and industrial sites.
