16/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – Cyprus presented, on Friday 12 April, its application to host the future European Labour Authority (see other news). Nicosia puts forward three arguments to support it: - its island position has enabled the island to acquire a long history in the integration of European, but also African and Middle Eastern workers; - Cyprus has excellent connections with the rest of the EU, as well as reception and housing facilities, adding that three-quarters of Cypriots speak English; - the State proposes a building at the entrance to the capital where it would not charge any rent. According to an internal source, Cyprus also has expertise in tripartite dialogue, based on operating the International Labour Organisation. Slovakia, a direct competitor, is the favourite in the eyes of some observers (see EUROPE 12215/29). To consult the brochure of the Cypriot application: https://bit.ly/2GoULGx. (PH)
