16/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – “A European framework for blockchain technology should not be rushed at the request of any government”, said Alfred Sant, MEP and head of the Maltese delegation in the S&D group, in a statement on Tuesday 16 April. This reaction follows the statement made the day before by French Minister Bruno Le Maire advocating for a European framework for regulating crypto-actives, inspired by the French model (see EUROPE 12236/16). The Maltese MEP is not fundamentally opposed to a European framework in this area, but believes that it should take into account all existing national systems, including the Maltese framework, which is particularly at the forefront in this field, he said. In his view, the establishment of a European framework should in any case not be rushed, as blockchain technology still needs time to develop to its full potential. (MF)
