Cambodia and Myanmar protest against tariffs on indica rice

16/04/2019 (Agence Europe)At a WTO meeting on Monday 15 April, Cambodia and Myanmar called on the EU to restore duty-free access for their indica rice exports. Because of their increase, the EU had indeed reintroduced customs duties of €175/tonne on these exports last January. This safeguard measure will be gradually reduced over 3 years (see EUROPE 12170/21). For Cambodia, these rights violate the principle of non-discrimination between trading partners. However, the European representative argued that this tariff exemption had been granted unilaterally to these countries under its Generalised System of Preferences (GSP). The GSP also allows safeguard measures to be used when increased imports are likely to affect European producers. On 11 April, Cambodia also challenged this measure before the EU Court of Justice (see EUROPE 12235/15) (HD)
