SECTORAL POLICIES / Energy

European ministers provided guidelines on future of EU's energy transition

Anton Anton, the Romanian Minister of Energy, said on Tuesday 2 April, after the informal ministerial meeting, that he and his counterparts had discussed the issue of energy transition.

It is easy to talk about decarbonisation” (gradual reduction of the share of energy emitting greenhouse gases); “acting is more complicated”, said the Romanian minister.

Anton Anton pointed out that the European Energy Ministers did not want to impose or ban technologies as part of this energy transition, “we must remain open to all possibilities”.

We must consume as little energy as possible, invest more in infrastructure and innovative solutions and our investments must be effective, said the Romanian minister.

The issue of sector coupling was also discussed, as well as regulatory barriers and energy prices," concluded Mr Anton.

The European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete, said: “in our transition to low-carbon energy systems, we will need to innovate, find an integrated approach for gas and electricity networks and make the most of renewable energies and gases, such as hydrogen”.

The European Council will adopt conclusions in June, in particular on the transition to low-carbon energy systems, the Commissioner recalled (see EUROPE 12220/4). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
