28/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – European Union Agency for Cybersecurity, ENISA, adopts a position in favour of regulatory initiatives to protect electoral processes in the European Union. In an opinion paper published on Thursday 28 February, the European Union agency particularly recommends that Member States “consider introducing national legislation to tackle the challenges associated with online disinformation while protecting the fundamental rights of EU citizens to the maximum extent possible”. It added that consideration should be given to regulation of digital service providers, social media, online platforms and messaging service providers at an EU level, in order to ensure a harmonised approach across the EU to tackling online disinformation aimed at undermining the democratic process.
