Despite a US/North Korea summit without progress, EU remains hopeful

28/02/2019 (Agence Europe)A spokeswoman for the European External Action Service did not want to dramatise, on Thursday 28 February, the failure of the summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Vietnam. No progress has been made on the de-nuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. "Progress on such complex issues is not achieved overnight, and such talks take time", she said in a statement sent to EUROPE. "We remain strongly convinced that despite all challenges, the diplomatic processes on the Korean Peninsula need to be promoted and build upon as the only way forward towards building confidence and establishing peace and security on a Korean Peninsula, free of nuclear weapons", she explained, adding that the EU was ready to facilitate and support the diplomatic path in consultation with its main partners.
