20/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – At a hearing on ending discards of fish at sea, MEP Alain Cadec (EPP, France) strongly criticised, on Tuesday 19 February, the provisions of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) on the landing obligation. "I voted against it because this rule is unenforceable", said the chairman of the European Parliament Fisheries Committee, speaking with his cap as a Member of Parliament. He considered that the EU had not taken into account the daily lives of fishermen (non-adapted boats). "We are at a dead end", he said. Many Members and experts acknowledged that the mandatory landing rule was difficult to implement, that the selectivity of gear had to be increased. The landing obligation has been fully operational since 1 January 2019. (LC)
