14/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – The EU High Representative's spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, called on the Venezuelan authorities on Monday 14 January to guarantee the “civil rights, freedom and physical integrity” of Juan Guaidó, the President of the Venezuelan National Assembly controlled by the political opposition, as well as the rights and freedoms of all members of this assembly boycotted by the Maduro regime. Mr Guaidó had been briefly detained the day before by Venezuelan intelligence services on his way to a political demonstration. The Foreign Affairs Council will take stock of the political and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela on Monday 21 January, ten days after the ceremonies marking the beginning of Nicolás Maduro’s second presidential term, which the European Union considers illegitimate.
