EU denounces Guatemalan unilateral decision to end UN anti-corruption mission

14/01/2019 (Agence Europe)The International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) should be allowed to complete its work until its current mandate ends in September 2019, said the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, in a statement on Friday 11 January. She was reacting to the Guatemalan government's unilateral announcement to end the activities of the CICIG Commission, a decision suspended by the country's Constitutional Court. CICIG President Iván Velásquez requested in September 2018 that President Jimmy Morales' immunity be lifted on suspicion of illegal financing of his election campaign. The EU and some Member States are providing financial support to CICIG, which, according to Ms Mogherini, has successfully fought corruption and strengthened the rule of law. (MB)
