14/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) and the European Cyclists Federation (ECF) welcomed, in press releases, the vote of MEPs on Thursday 10 January by the European Parliament's Transport Committee on the report on Directive 2008/96/EC on road infrastructure safety management (see EUROPE 12169). While the ETSC is in favour of extending the scope of the current text to all major urban or rural roads, an option that was not retained by MEPs, the organisation considers that the voted text offers “considerably higher potential safety benefits” than those agreed by ministers on last 3 December (see EUROPE 12151, 12141). The ECF welcomes the emphasis placed by parliamentarians on vulnerable road users. (LT)
