14/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for Migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, had a "constructive" meeting with the Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte as well as meeting with the Italian Minister of the Interior and Head of the League, Matteo Salvini, on Monday 14 January in Rome. On Twitter, the Commissioner explained that he and Mr Salvini shared "the same priorities" on migration, namely: the continued protection of the EU's external borders, cooperation with third countries to reduce irregular arrivals in the EU and increased returns. The two men also discussed the problems regarding migrant disembarkation and situations that could recur, as well as the establishment of an European solidarity mechanism that the Commission is calling for in order to move closer to an agreement on the Dublin Regulation.
