27/11/2018 (Agence Europe) – The prospect of a unified EU position on the future ‘Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration' is becoming increasingly remote. Slovakia has joined the group of EU Member States that have announced their intention to turn their backs on this non-binding instrument, which is supposed to provide a framework for international cooperation on migration (see EUROPE 12144). Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini announced after the extraordinary European summit on Brexit on 25 November in Brussels that he will not support the Pact “under any circumstances". Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic and Poland preceded Slovakia. Denmark is reluctant. Concluded in July at the UN, the Pact is due to be ratified on 10 December at the Marrakech Intergovernmental Conference marking the end of the negotiation process. (AN)
