27/11/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 26 November, Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilár (S&D, Spain) urged the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties to support his own-initiative report on humanitarian visas, which failed to find a majority in plenary on 14 November (see EUROPE 12138). Some MEPs reportedly withdrew their voting cards too quickly. "I ask for your cooperation and for your support for this paper", he told them, stressing that he was only 26 votes short and that it would be "incomprehensible if the European Parliament were not able to get this through". In a brief exchange, several MEPs supported him, but Austrian Heinz Becker (EPP) warned him against unpleasant surprises, given that some MEPs are not enthusiastic about the project. The parliamentary committee is expected to vote on the report in early December, before returning to plenary in mid-December. (SP)
