14/11/2018 (Agence Europe) – EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer assessed on Wednesday, November 14 in Washington, the next steps in the implementation of the roadmap prepared by Presidents Juncker and Trump in July 2018. At the heart of the discussions are increased regulatory cooperation and the outlines of a free trade agreement limited to industrial goods (see EUROPE 12134). The EU's engagement in these talks is also a guarantee of a truce on new tariff sanctions threatening the European car industry, Malmström told the German Marshall Fund the day before. In her speech, the Commissioner referred to the challenges facing the multilateral trading system, and the need to "save" the WTO appellate body, which is stigmatised by the Trump Administration. (HD)
