Portugal again taken to Court over airport slots

08/11/2018 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 8 November, the European Commission brought an action before the European Court of Justice against Portugal for failing to comply with the rules of EU law on the allocation of airport slots, despite a first judgment of the CJEU. In 2016, the latter had condemned Lisbon following an infringement action brought by the Commission for failing to provide necessary safeguards regarding the functional and financial independence of the slot coordinator. As Portugal has not complied with this judgment, the Commission has therefore decided to refer the matter back to the Court, asking it to impose a lump sum fine of €1.849 million on the Portuguese authorities and a daily penalty payment of €7,452 if the first judgment is still not complied with at the time of the second judgment. (LT)
