07/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 7 June in Luxembourg, EU Transport Ministers obtained a general approach on the draft directive on the interoperability of electronic road toll systems. As previously announced (see EUROPE 12026), this agreement is based overall on the European Commission's proposal presented on 31 May 2017 as part of the first mobility package (see EUROPE 11799). The inter-institutional negotiations with Parliament will be able to begin as MEPs reached their position on this question on 24 May last. No general approach, however, was reached on the use of vehicles hired without drivers. Certain states, the majority of which come from Western Europe, are particularly concerned about cabotage rules being circumvented and expressed a wish for adequate time to finalise the text. The latter has therefore become the subject of a progress report and will be tackled jointly with the social questions in the first mobility package (see other article). (LT)
