07/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – When it meets on Monday 11 June, the European Parliament’s fisheries committee will discuss a recommendation from its chair, Alain Cadec (EPP, France), that seeks to object to a delegated act establishing fisheries conservation measures for the protection of the marine environment in the North Sea. Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands and United Kingdom have submitted a joint recommendation to the Commission seeking to improve the integrity of the seabed by limiting the use of mobile bottom gears in the four fisheries management areas concerned. Proposed measures include a ban on fishing with mobile bottom gears, with two exceptions (two fishing zones). Cadec argues that the unquantified number of vessels that could be granted exemptions could have an impact on the effectiveness of the proposed measures. (LC)
