The European Commission has announced that the EU-Armenia comprehensive and enhanced partnership agreement, signed on 24 November, is to be provisionally applied from 1 June.
The agreement will apply to areas relating to EU competence, while awaiting all EU member states to ratify it. It notably involves cooperation on political dialogue and domestic reforms, the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms, migration and asylum, and sectoral policies such as transport, the environment, energy, agriculture and consumer protection.
The Commission says trade is also covered by the provisional application, "enabling the EU and Armenia to, for example, work to enhance the regulatory environment in Armenia, thus improving the business climate and investment opportunities for Armenian and EU companies".
The agreement will enter into force once the process of ratification by the member states and the procedure for conclusion by the EU is completed. While Armenia has already ratified the agreement, on the EU side, only Estonia and Latvia have done so. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
