Snapchat signs up to Code of Conduct on tackling online hate speech

07/05/2018 (Agence Europe)The Snapchat photograph and video sharing application has become the seventh signatory to the EU Code of Conduct on tackling illegal online hate speech, according to a European Commission announcement on Monday 7 May. Snap.Inc therefore joins Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and YouTube, as well as Instagram and Google+, which announced their participation last January (see EUROPE 11943), in the fight against online hate speech or speech that is racist or xenophobic. It should be recalled that the Code, which was put in place in 2016, calls on major digital companies to tackle messages flagged up and validated in this regard, within 24-hours. European Commissioner for Justice Vĕra Jourová welcomes that “The growing number of participants proves that the EU Code of Conduct is an efficient way to make the Internet a safer place”. The Commission is currently examining possible additional measures (see EUROPE 12013)(MF)
