07/05/2018 (Agence Europe) – With the Commission’s proposal on the first CO2 targets for heavy-duty vehicles expected mid-May, the NGO Transport & Environment, which advocates sustainable transport, said in early May that the Commission was “under pressure to present ambitious objectives”. Those objectives are called for by an unprecedented alliance of large international brands and carrier associations seeking a 24% reduction in emissions by 2025. In a joint letter addressed to Jean-Claude Juncker in April, Carrefour, Ikea, Unilever, Heineken, Nestlé, Geodis and transport associations said the objective would allow the EU to remain a leader in combating climate change and would save €7,700 annually, per vehicle. They also called for a binding target for sales of zero emission HGVs. (AN)
