25/04/2018 (Agence Europe) – Wim van de Camp MEP (EPP, Netherlands), Parliament's rapporteur on lorry drivers’ working time (see EUROPE 11996), spent the night of 23-24 April in a lorry parked in a secure parking area. This initiative was carried out by the International Road Transport Union (IRU) and aimed to underline the need to speed up the introduction of parking infrastructure in Europe. The MEP stated, “Drivers should not be forced to take their rest outside of their trucks. However, sleeping in a truck can only be constituted as a good rest if done in a safe and secure parking facility”. The MEP took part in a debate the following day on the mobility package under the banner of the IRU. Ismail Ertug (S&D, Germany) also took part in the debate.
