25/04/2018 (Agence Europe) – The EPP Group in the European Parliament is calling on the EU to double spending on cancer research by 2024. In a press release issued on Wednesday 25 April, it calls for Horizon 2020 co-financing to be increased from the current €200 million to €400 million. The EPP call comes a few days before the new European budget for 2021-2027 is presented. “We have a dream. We want to make the impossible possible: to ensure that nobody dies from cancer in the EU 20 years from now”, EPP leader Manfred Weber told a press conference. As well as calling for additional funding, the group urges greater cooperation among the member states (in research, diagnosis and care) and a closer focus on children. Françoise Grossetête (EPP, France) also proposed that a specific line be created in the next multiannual financial framework. (SPj)
