United Kingdom examining possibility of launching its own satellite navigation programme

25/04/2018 (Agence Europe)According to an article published by the BBC on Wednesday 25 April, the British government is planning to launch its own satellite navigation system. The decision was made due to the risk that after Brexit, the UK would no longer be able to access certain Galileo services. The Secretary of State for Industrial Strategy, Greg Clark, informed the Financial Times that they intended to recover the entire sum invested by the British in this programme (€1.4 billion) and would consider alternatives. The BBC reported that the British space agency would also examine the feasibility of a British system that would be "less expensive" than Galileo. In reply to journalists on the same day, Commissioner for the Internal Market and Industry Elżbieta Bieńkowska was unwilling to provide a response and simply indicated that she only had responsibility for launching European programmes on time and within budgetary restraints.
