On Wednesday 25 April, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini did not come across as very enthusiastic about the idea of US President Donald Trump and France's President Emmanuel Macron to "work" together on a new nuclear agreement with Iran which, in their view, would be much broader.
"There is already an agreement. It works and it needs to be preserved", she told media when arriving at a conference on Syria.
During a press conference, Mogherini was still more explicit. "There is no question of renegotiating the deal. That is not what the two presidents discussed", she said, adding that her team had been in contact with Macron. According to Mogherini, this is about an additional agreement, but the existing one will not be affected.
"The comprehensive plan of action remains, and is intact, and must continue to be implemented. There can be other agreements that build on this agreement", she added, saying that it expressed the opinion of the 28 EU member states, other member countries of the United Nations Security Council and the Iranians.
Mogherini and Iran's Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met on Wednesday afternoon, notably to discuss this issue. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
