23/04/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Sunday 22 April, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) condemned the attacks carried out the same day at voter registration centres in Kabul and in Baghlan province, following attacks a few days earlier in Ghor, Nangarhar and in Badghis province. At least 57 people were killed and 119 injured just in the attack at the voter registration centre in Kabul – an attack claimed by so-called Islamic State. "The upcoming elections in Afghanistan will be key for democracy in the country. Afghan citizens will be given the opportunity to exercise their fundamental human right to vote and to influence their country’s future", the EEAS spokesperson stated in a press release. "Such attacks will not prevent democracy from taking its course in Afghanistan", the spokesperson warned, adding that the EU stands in solidarity with the authorities and the Afghan people. (CG)
