19/03/2018 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for Migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, has expressed sadness following the deaths of sixteen people and the disappearance of three others on Saturday 17 March. This follows another boat sinking containing migrants in the Aegean Sea and is the most fatal to have occurred since the conclusion of the EU-Turkey agreement two years ago, which sought to stem the numbers of refugees arriving in Europe from the Turkish coast. The Commissioner pointed out that efforts still had to be made with Turkey to avoid these tragedies. Sixteen bodies, of whom six were children, were retrieved from off the island of Agathonissi in the South East Aegean Sea on Saturday, according to Ert public radio, quoted by AFP. (SP)
