Council concerned about situation stemming from state of emergency and considers targeted sanctions

Judging that the situation in the Maldives is "not in accordance with the principles of democratic rule and separation of powers", the EU Foreign Affairs Council warned on Monday 26 February that it could "consider targeted measures" if this situation does not improve.

The situation in the country is very unstable following its president's decision to declare a state of emergency and the decision of the supreme court to reverse its decision on political opponents (see EUROPE 11955).

In its conclusions, which were adopted without debate, the Council asks all the actors of the country, especially the police, to show restraint.  The relevant institutions should lift the state of emergency "immediately" and restore all constitutionally guaranteed rights, the ministers add, calling for the respect of the rule of law and the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The heads of diplomacy also call for the immediate release of political prisoners, and condemn all interference in the work of the supreme court and the measures taken against the judiciary and judges.

"The Council calls on the government of the Maldives to engage with the leaders of the opposition in a genuine dialogue that paves the way for credible, transparent and inclusive presidential elections", the ministers state, adding that the EU is ready to support United Nations facilitation of such a dialogue.  The presidential election is scheduled for this year.  (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
