26/02/2018 (Agence Europe) – Shocked by the announcement of the murder this weekend of Slovak investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his partner Martina Kušnírová, Benedek Jávor MEP (Greens/EFA, Hungary) has urged the European Union to take urgent action to better defend the journalistic profession and the freedom of the press. The Greens/EFA group call on European Parliament President Antonio Tajani to speak about this subject at the opening of the Parliament's mini-plenary session on Wednesday 28 February. Astounded at this murder, which comes a few months after that of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, the head of the European Federation of Journalists, Mogens Blicher Bjerregård, said this tragedy is "a very worrying signal for journalism in the European Union" if the link to Kuciak's death due to his investigative work is proven. Kuciak investigated cases of tax fraud and evasion through the information portal Aktuality.sk. (MB)
