14/02/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 14 February, the European Parliament's S&D Group welcomed the decision of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to open preliminary examinations into the "very worrying" human rights situation in the Philippines. "Reports documenting alleged crimes committed in the context of the 'war on drugs' launched by the Duterte government are extremely disturbing", Swedish MEP Soraya Post, the S&D spokesperson for human rights, stated in a press release, saying it was "high time" the ICC investigate the situation. Since the arrival of Rodrigo Duterte to power in 2016, over 12,000 people are reported to have been killed in this 'war'. The S&D also strongly condemned Duterte’s latest "misogynist remarks inciting violence" to shoot female guerrilla fighters in the genitals. (CG)
