GDP grew by 2.5% in Eurozone and EU in 2017

Seasonally adjusted GDP grew by 2.5% in both the Eurozone and the European Union throughout the whole of 2017, according to a flash estimate of the statistical office of the European Union (Eurostat) dated Wednesday 14 February.

Furthermore, the figures provided on 30 January have been confirmed (see EUROPE 11950), as Eurostat estimates that GDP grew by 0.6% in the fourth quarter of 2017 in both areas. Between the fourth quarter of 2016 and the fourth quarter of 2017, the growth rate therefore stands at 2.7% of GDP in the Eurozone and at 2.6% of GDP in the EU.

These growth rates are slightly down compared to those observed in the third quarter of last year, when GDP grew by 0.7% in both areas, for growth of 2.8% of GDP compared to the third quarter of 2016.

Although the figures are not yet in from all member states, the national economies developed very differently in the last quarter, when GDP grew by 1.5% in Lithuania and 1.3% in Hungary, whilst Italy and Latvia saw a growth rate of 0.3% of GDP over the same period.  (Original version in French by Lucas Tripoteau)
