02/02/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 21 February, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service underlined the European Union's "serious concern" about the worsening of the human rights situation in Equatorial Guinea, where at least 130 people are being detained arbitrarily. The spokesperson says that the death under police custody, in mid-January, of Ebee Ela, a member of the opposition party 'Ciudadanos por la Innovación', is expected to be the subject of an investigation aiming swiftly to clarify the reasons for his death. During the parliamentary elections in November, the ruling power won 99 of the 100 seats in the national parliament, provoking a wave of protests in the country. The EEAS calls on Equatorial Guinea, which currently has a seat on the United Nations Security Council, to take action to respect its international obligations on human rights. (MB)
