16/01/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 16 January, the European Parliament adopted a non-legislative resolution that urges the European Union to pay particular attention to women in its climate policy. The rapporteur, Linnéa Engström (Greens/EFA, Sweden), explained, “Women and girls are acutely vulnerable in the face of climate change. Not only are they likely to be living in the marginal areas that are the worst affected, they are especially vulnerable once displaced”. Her report was adopted by 485 votes in favour, 117 against, with 20 abstentions. It calls on the Commission and member states to take action and for them to, above all, empower women. For example, it calls for improvements to be made to their knowledge and involvement in prevention programmes and to introduce follow-up mechanisms in reception centres for displaced persons. (SPj)
