16/01/2018 (Agence Europe) – At the conference celebrating the 25th anniversary of the single market attended by the chairperson of the European Parliament’s industry committee, Anneleen Van Bossuyt (ECR, Belgium), Internal Market and Industry Commissioner, Elżbieta Bieńkowska, seriously criticised the attitude displayed by member states to the single market by stating, “All Member state say they believe in single market, but when we say it, with Anneleen, we really mean it. Because sometimes with Member States it’s quite the contrary: too often, when we put forward proposals, they are watering down”. In this context she highlighted the services directive and, at a more general level, market fragmentation. She called for “courage" and "imagination" in an effort to deepen the single market. The Commissioner has already criticised the member states in the past, particularly on the issue of Motor vehicle type approval (see EUROPE 11729). (PH)
