16/01/2018 (Agence Europe) – The European Union reiterated its commitment to Iraq on Monday 15 January after a double suicide attack in the centre of Baghdad, which claimed at least 31 lives and left nearly 100 wounded. This is the second attack of the type in the capital in three days. "Showing mutual solidarity and unity against violence is the best way to defeat terrorism fully and construct a brighter future for the country. At this critical crossroads in Iraqi history, the EU reaffirms its continued commitment to stand by the Iraqis and their government to build a stable and peaceful Iraq", the spokesperson for the European External Action Service stated in a press release. Elsewhere, the Foreign Affairs Council could adopt conclusions on Iraq on 22 January in connection with the Commission's new strategy (see EUROPE 11934). (CG)
