European Commission plans third revision of directive on carcinogenic and mutagenic agents

At the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO) on Thursday 15 June, the European commissioner for employment and social affairs, Marianne Thyssen, announced a new review in 2018 of the directive on the protection of workers against the risks linked to exposure to carcinogenic and mutagenic agents.

This will be the third revision in three years. For the time being, not much information has filtered through and the substance of this development is still unknown, EUROPE has been informed. The announcement was made the same day as the ministers for social affairs were adopting a general approach on a second draft revision of the directive on seven carcinogenic and mutagenic agents (Directive 2004/37/EC) (see EUROPE 11808). This fast track adoption took place six months after the European Commission proposal (see EUROPE 11700).

Initial revision of European legislation had been announced in May 2016 by the European Commission (see EUROPE 11551). Inter-institutional negotiations have been continuing after the agreement at the Council last October (see EUROPE 11645). (Original version in French by Pascal Hansens)
