EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Indonesia

European Parliament urges Jakarta to boost religious tolerance and social diversity

Worried about the growing intolerance in Indonesia of ethnic, religious and sexual minorities, the European Parliament called on the authorities on Thursday 15 June to step up their efforts to boost religious tolerance and social diversity.

In a joint statement of the ECR, Greens/EFA, S&D, ALDE, GUE/NGL and EPP adopted by the MEPs, they urge the Indonesian authorities to protect vulnerable minorities and not persecute them, calling among other things for a reformulation of the blasphemy law.

The resolution calls on the Indonesian authorities to abrogate all legal measures restricting fundamental freedoms and human rights, and to restore the moratorium on use of the death penalty as a step towards abolishing it.

The European Parliament also discusses the situation facing LGBTI, such as rising intolerance and violence.  The MEPs urge the authorities to refrain from making any discriminatory public statements about LGBTI people and other minorities.  They also condemn the arrest of 141 men in a police raid on a gay club in Jakarta on 21 May 2017, despite the fact that homosexuality is not a crime in Indonesian legislation. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
